Madeleine Loughery
Hello NorthSide Soccer Families,

This tribute is to honour one of the founding members of Calgary Northside Soccer, Madeleine Loughery, who passed away on October 11, 2016, after a long courageous battle with breast cancer. Madeleine started in Edgemont Soccer and she was one of the initial people who brought Edgemont Soccer, Hamptons Soccer and NorthStar Soccer together. With her hard work, Calgary Northside Soccer was formed. Madeleine had a way of quickly figuring things out before the rest of us and a certain fearlessness. As she would wait for us to catch up, she would point us in the right direction, show us easy steps to get things done, and she would move on to the next loose end that needed looking after. She had endless energy and resourcefulness in solving problems, and she immediately became one of our strongest Calgary Northside Soccer volunteers. Madeleine will be deeply missed by many from her Calgary Northside Soccer family.
Madeleine Eva Clara Loughery, of Calgary, was surrounded by her beloved husband Jim, and adored sons Ken, Ben and Oliver. Born in Mönchengladbach, Germany, she was the daughter of Irene Druy and the late Guido Thomas. Graduating with a Masters in Economics from Universität MÜnster, Germany, she worked to become the youngest Vice President in BHF Bank in Frankfurt, Germany. After marrying and having three sons, she became a volunteer leader in Le Leche League helping new mothers until moving to Calgary in 2004.
Madeleine became an active volunteer in local schools, Edgemont Soccer, and the Calgary Northside Soccer Association. In 2011, she became the Manager of the Calgary Women's Soccer Association which she enjoyed immensely. Madeleine's passions were family, community, gardening and tirelessly volunteering. Madeleine is survived by her husband, Jim; three sons, Kenneth, Benjamin and Oliver; mother, Irene Dury and one aunt, Inge Thomas both of Germany; two brothers, Mark (Ulla) and JÜrgen; two step siblings, Michael and Sylvia; mother-in- law Muriel Loughery; brother and sister-in- laws George and Sharon Loughery, Diane and Allan Cameron, Sharon and Doug Fillmore; nephews, Jamie Cameron, Christian and Kevin Stricker; nieces, Sarah and Sophie Fillmore. She will be fondly remembered by her many kind and wonderful friends, neighbours and colleagues. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Madeleine's family at www.evanjstrong.com. For those who wish, memorials can be made to a charity of your choice.
CNS Strikers – New Balance Nottingham International Cup 2016
The dream finally arrived and it delivered with many memorable memories on and off the field that will last a lifetime as the CNS Strikers played in England at the Nottingham Cup this past July. After a slow start, the boys got stronger as the tournament progressed. With competition from local clubs from England, USA and Zimbabwe, it really made this an international affair. The boys stamped their ticket into the finals after playing a select team from England in the semis to ultimately face Zimbabwe. The final was nothing but a classic as the Strikers were down 2-0 at half but fought back to tie the game late and almost won it in regulation. The game went to penalties and after 8 shooters, we fell short of completing the comeback. It was an emotional loss as the boys knew their minor career had come to an end. We are so proud of these boys as they wore their hearts on their sleeve and showed a lot of resilience during this tournament as they stayed true to their mantra that Nothing is Given and Everything is Earned.
The rest of the trip entailed seeing the sights and sounds of London, which included the Tower of London, Wembley Stadium, London Eye, Buckingham Palace and ProGame between Ashton Villa and Middlesbrough. It was truly both a soccer and cultural experience that we will all cherish. Dreams do come true but more importantly Without Dreams…Nothing Gets Done. Congratulation to the CNS Strikers for all of their years and all the best to the boys as they turn a new chapter in their lives.
